Japanese core machinery orders rebounded in June after falling for two straight months, government data showed Wednesday.

Core orders-a leading indicator of business investment-rose 8.3% from the previous month, better than a 3.4% increase expected by economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal and the Nikkei. On a year-on-year basis, core orders in June decreased 0.9%.

The German government is working to curb the influx of migrants into the country despite its welcoming discourse on refugees, statistics released on Tuesday suggest.

Authorities turned back more undocumented migrants at German borders during the first half of this year and deported more foreigners without residency permits than during all of 2015, according to the latest government figures.

Germany denied 13,324 migrants entry at its borders in the period from January to June — nearly 50% more than the 8,913 people it rejected in 2015, the interior ministry said in a response to a parliamentary inquiry from the opposition Left party published Tuesday. In July, 16,160 entered Germany, bringing the total number of migrants pursuing asylum to 238,424 during the January-July period, according to the latest interior ministry figures published on Monday.

German police are holding a suspected Islamic State member thought to have been planning an attack on a soccer game, a German official said on Tuesday.

A special police commando unit arrested the man on Friday afternoon in Mutterstadt, a rural area near Mannheim in southwest Germany, said Michael Maurer, a spokesman for the Interior Ministry of Rhineland-Palatinate, a state along the French border. Mr. Maurer said the man was “suspected of belonging to the Islamic State.”

The man is also suspected of planning to target a soccer game in the second Bundesliga, the country’s second-division soccer league, Mr. Maurer said. German media reported that the man was a 25-year-old Syrian who arrived in the country as a refugee.

European stocks face early losses on Wednesday with the FTSE seen 21 points lower and the DAX opening down 27, according to IG futures.

Stocks in Asia were mixed in a largely muted reaction to a record high in U.S. stocks, while a stronger yen kept pressure on Japan’s Nikkei Stock Average.

The Nikkei declined 0.3% in early trade, after the yen rose around 0.5% against the dollar, raising the hurdle for local exporters. Elsewhere, the Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.1% and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index added 0.5%.

U.S. stocks eked out slight gains Tuesday as the Nasdaq Composite closed at another record. Trading has been relatively quiet the past few weeks, even as major U.S. indexes have hit records. The S&P 500 hasn’t had a daily move of 1% or more in either direction since July 8.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose less than 0.1%. The blue-chip index came within 10 points of its July 20 closing high of 18595.03 earlier in the session. The S&P 500 added less than 0.1% and hit a new intraday high earlier in the session. The Nasdaq Composite climbed 0.2%.

Corporate News:
==============

Canadian film and television producer and distributor Entertainment One has rejected a takeover offer from U.K. broadcaster ITV PLC after the two sides couldn’t agree on a price, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The deal collapse comes after ITV submitted a bid for Entertainment One in a transaction that would have helped ITV diversify its business away from advertising revenue as part of an effort to bolster its content library.

Forex:
=====

A broad slide of the U.S. dollar was giving EUR/USD another leg up in Asian trade.

The common currency rose significantly for a second day, and is now taking a peek at the Bollinger uptrend channel which begins at 1.1150. A daily closing above that mark would constitute a bullish technical signal that might trigger a continuation of the EUR/USD rally, possibly toward the 1.1262 ceiling of the daily Ichimoku Cloud resistance zone.

The dollar was generally weaker across the board amid a general calm in markets due to the summer holiday lull. Odds of a U.S. interest rate-rise in September remain muted at 18%, though up slightly from 12% a day ago, keeping carry-trade investors comfortable with their dollar-shorts.

At 0250 GMT, EUR/USD was at 1.1148-51.

Bonds:
=====

European government bonds could find favor at Wednesday’s open with equity markets set for early losses.

U.S. government bonds strengthened Tuesday after the Bank of England had difficulty buying gilts from investors while an auction of three-year Treasury notes attracted strong demand, underscoring the continued appeal of government bonds in a world of low growth and tepid inflation.

As part of its broader effort to stimulate the U.K. economy, the BOE had hoped to buy GBP1.17 billion ($1.52 billion) of longer-term gilts in a reverse auction Tuesday, but received offers of only GBP1.12 billion, the central bank reported.

That result, which indicated that at least some investors were reluctant to part with bonds, led to a decline in gilt yields that carried over into the Treasury market, analysts said.

Later in the day, a $24 billion auction of three-year Treasury notes attracted robust demand from indirect bidders, a gauge of foreign buying. That broke a run of lackluster sales of shorter-term debt and suggested investors aren’t overly concerned about the Federal Reserve raising interest rates soon despite Friday’s better-than-expected nonfarm employment report.

In late-afternoon trading in New York, the yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note was 1.545%, compared with 1.587% Monday. The yield on the 10-year gilt fell to 0.575% from 0.609%, according to Tradeweb.

The market has recently “been a little choppy” in part because of upcoming bond sales and the absence of many investors who are away on vacation, said Thomas Simons, vice president and money market economist in the Fixed Income Group at Jefferies.

Investors are looking for more insight into the Fed’s policy outlook when officials gather at an annual conference in Jackson Hole later this month, Mr. Simons said, adding that “in the meantime I think we’re going to be pretty range-bound,” he added.

Energy:
======

Oil prices were largely muted in early Asia trade as the upcoming OPEC meeting failed to excite investors who are more focused on the persistent overhang of supplies and the still-strong U.S. crude production, said ANZ Research.

A survey of analysts and traders by the Wall Street Journal estimates U.S. crude stocks to have fallen by 800,000 barrels last week. Industry group American Petroleum Institute expects an increase of 2 million barrels in U.S. crude inventories. Official data from the U.S. energy department will be released later Wednesday. At 0312 GMT, Nymex was down 3 cents at $42.74 a barrel, while Brent was up 1 cent at $44.99.

U.S. gasoline prices are set to fall below $2 a gallon on average in October and stay there through the winter, government forecasters said Tuesday.

The Energy Information Administration cut its price forecast for national average retail gasoline prices to $1.95 a gallon in the fourth quarter, down from last month’s forecast of $2.07 a gallon, according to the agency’s short-term energy outlook released Tuesday. The EIA expects gasoline prices to hold below $2 a gallon on average from October through February.

Metals:
======

Gold prices rose in Asia as the dollar weakened on mixed U.S. economic data.

Physical gold demand from India remains lackluster, but is expected to pick up over the next few weeks due to a good monsoon season. Analysts are bullish about gold’s prospects through the year despite the chance of a U.S. rate increase.

At 0232 GMT, gold was trading at $1,348.36/oz, up from $1,340.25/oz at the previous close.
