19:52 EDT [Dow Jones]–Researchers have used genetic-sequencing technologies to sequence the DNA of brain tissue in 10 people with signs of a brain infection and then compared results to a large database of genetic information on viruses, bacteria and pathogens to rapidly identify potential infections. In a paper published in Neurology: Neuroimmunology & Neuroinflammation, the researchers identified the infection in eight of the 10 cases and said they plan to develop the technique further. Figuring out what organism is causing the brain infection rapidly is important for treatment, but researchers say they need to sequence the genomes of more organisms to make the technique even more effective.
